Banner Training (hands-on) 

The banner training program is provided for Banner users throughout the University community who need to learn the skills necessary to use the administrative computer system.  Kathie Parker is the facilitator for all classes.  Participants are reminded to arrive on time for classes - if you arrive more than 15 minutes past the start time, you will not be allowed to attend. 

All classes are held in Spong Hall, Room 2402.

Banner Basics (course description)

This is a pre-requisite for Banner Finance and Budget and Banner General Student, and it is recommended that employees take this class before taking the specific finance or student class.  During this hands-on session, participants learn basic navigational skills and will acquire a knowledge base on which all other Banner training sessions build.  Participants will learn how to create a personal menu of frequently used forms.

Audience:  New Banner users.

Banner Finance and Budget (course description)

During this hands-on training session, participants will learn how to access and interpret budget information in Banner; learn the forms that allow departments to do internal financial reporting; check available balances (and understand why discrepancies can occur); identify Banner transaction codes; research invoices; determine if a vendor is in ODU's vendor table; check base budget information; and learn about tools associated with monitoring your budgets.

Audience: Individuals responsible for monitoring departmental budgets.

Banner General Student (course description)

During this hands-on training session, participants will learn how to access information on students.  Topics covered include how to do a name search if you do not have the ID#, determine the gender and marital status of a student; determine the admissions status of a student (including missing credentials); view test scores; see if a student has a declared major; determine if a student has holds and what they are; review course registrations for a specific semester by student ; view a class roster; view academic history; and find out if a student has applied for graduation and/or graduated.

Audience:  Individuals responsible for accessing student records or those who input student information.

Registration Information

  • Registration is done using the Department of Human Resources' Learning Management System (LMS) tool through Old Dominion University's Knowledge Center.

  • BEFORE YOU CAN REGISTER FOR CLASSES (required only once) - In order to use the ODU Knowledge Center web site, you must be a State employee and will need to first self-register.  Please contact odukc@odu.edu for assistance.  You do not need to register if you are already registered in the Commonwealth of Virginia Knowledge Center.
     
  • Classified employees are required to obtain supervisory permission prior to completing registration. 

  • REGISTERING - Once you log into the ODU Knowledge Center, select Learning Center and then Course Catalog.  Then find the specific class (Key Word Search - "ODU BANNER 2014-2" - exact match).

  • A few days prior to class, Kathie Parker will send a reminder e-mail with final reminders.
