Frequently Asked Questions

Why are there SAFE RIDE and Escort Services at Old Dominion University?

WE CARE!!! This is one of the many crime prevention programs available to the university community.

Will I be able to get an escort or SAFE RIDE late at night?

Yes. The hours of the program are from 5:30 PM to 2:30 AM, seven days a week. The service is provided at no cost. The SAFE RIDE and Escort Program does not operate when the university is closed, during holidays, or during the Spring and Fall Breaks. After 2:30 AM and during all periods when the program is not in operation, SAFE RIDES and escorts are conducted by ODU Police Officers in marked patrol cars.

SAFE RIDE van drivers have the authority to refuse to pick up intoxicated or aggressive riders. The SAFE RIDE van will not transport any alcoholic beverages.

How do I get a SAFE RIDE or Escort?

SAFE RIDE van pick-ups can be arranged by calling the Old Dominion University SAFE RIDE and Escort Service at 683-3477. When calling, give your name, the number of riders to be picked up, the location where you want to be picked up and your destination. NOTE: No reservations for pick up at a specific time will be taken. Pick ups are on a first come, first served basis and will be made as quickly as possible; however, depending on call volume and destinations, there may be a delay before a pick up can be made; your patience and understanding are appreciated.

Service boundaries for the SAFE RIDE vans are from W 38th St. (south) to Magnolia Avenue (north) and from Colley Avenue (east) to the Elizabeth River (west). The SAFE RIDE van will not take you to Waterside, Military Circle, or other distant locations. No rides will be given to any location outside of the service boundaries.

Escorts are limited to on-campus locations and are arranged by calling the SAFE RIDE and Escort Service at 683-3477. When calling, give your name, the location where you want to be escorted from and your destination. On-campus escorts are conducted by Patrol Aides who may be on foot, a T3 personal transporter, golf cart or electric car. In some instances a SAFE RIDE van may be dispatched in lieu of a Patrol Aide. Patrol Aides can be identified by their light blue uniform shirt and reflective vest. Escorts are dispatched on a first come, first served basis and will arrive as quickly as possible; however, depending on call volume and destinations, there may be a delay; your patience and understanding are appreciated.

How long does it take for an SAFE RIDE van or escort to arrive?

The average response time is 5 to 10 minutes. The response of the will depend on call volume. It is not necessary to call back multiple times to ask when you will be picked up. Such calls tie up the telephone unnecessarily and do not expedite service. If you should call for a pick up and later determine you will not need the ride or escort, please be courteous and call back at 683-3477 and cancel your pick up request.

Is there any charge?

No, the service is free for unlimited escorts or rides in the SAFE RIDE van.

Who are the Patrol Aides?

All Patrol Aides are upper-class University students, men and women, working part time for the Police Department. They are supervised by the Crime Prevention Supervisor and a Student Coordinator.
