THE FOLLOWING ARE AREAS OF INFORMATION NEEDING YOUR VERIFICATION WHEN MEETING WITH YOUR ADVISOR:

1. CHECK YOUR MAJOR STATUS ON YOUR TRANSCRIPT ON Leo-online and WHEN YOU MEET WITH YOUR ADVISOR.

2. HAVE YOU TAKEN THE EXIT WRITING EXAM?
It is wise to take this by the SECOND SEMESTER OF YOUR JUNIOR YEAR; if you need to REPEAT THE EXAM, you will then have time to do so. You are eligible to take the exam after completing 58 credit hours and ENGL 110C and 111C. The exam is offered monthly; the schedule for registering for the exam, as well as the exam dates, are listed in each semester’s GUIDE TO ENROLLMENT, as well as on-line (go to www.odu.edu, then to Current Students, then to Academic Resources, then to Writing Center).

3. HOW ARE YOU COMPLETING THE UPPER DIVISION GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT?
**If you are following the requirements FOR OPTION A (MINOR OR SECOND MAJOR), make sure you have DECLARED WITH THE APPROPRIATE DEPARTMENT; be sure to check their requirements for THE MAJOR OR MINOR IN TERMS OF G.P.A. (ALL MINORS REQUIRE AT LEAST A 2.0 -- SOME HAVE HIGHER STANDARDS!)
**If you are using the 1998- present catalog, you may select OPTION B, a Cluster (students under previous year catalogs also have this option, but may need to consider graduation deadlines). Make sure your Major Advisor declares your cluster on-line. Your advisor also needs to certify you for your cluster in order to graduate.

**Be aware that if you have a SOCIAL SCIENCE MINOR, or 2 SOCIAL SCIENCE COURSES FOR CATEGORY 3 OF OPTION B, you are also fulfilling the DEPARMENTAL REQUIREMENT of 6 HOURS OF UPPER LEVEL SOCIAL SCIENCE COURSES for the B.S. Degree.

4. HOW ARE YOU SATISFYING THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT?
If you are getting a B.S. DEGREE, you follow the requirements for GENERAL EDUCATION (i.e. graduation prior to June 1986, OR 3 credits of 1 language, OR 2 credits in each of 2 languages in High School, OR 101F-102F of a single foreign language). If you are getting a B.A. DEGREE, you must complete ONE LANGUAGE AT THE 202 LEVEL (regardless of how much language was completed in High School).

5. ARE YOUR GRADES MEETING THE DEPARTMENTAL STANDARDS?
You MUST EARN a C (2.00) or BETTER in all MAJOR COURSES (within the Communication Department).
REMEMBER: You will not graduate if you have a C- OR LESS in any Communication course, unless you have repeated that course, earning a higher grade, OR an equivalent.
**NOTE: If you do REPEAT a course, realize that the CREDIT HOURS for that
course count only ONCE towards the 120 needed for GRADUATION.

6. ARE YOUR ENGLISH COMPOSITION COURSE GRADES MEETING THE COLLEGE REQUIREMENT?
You must earn a “C” or better in both ENGL 110C and 111C, and should have done so prior to declaring your major.

7. ARE YOU AWARE that you must complete a minimum of one writing intensive course in your major?
Communication courses which are writing intensive courses include: COMM 315W, 335W, 400W, 412W, 447W, 470W, AND 471W (at least 50% of the course grade is based on writing assignments). If you are satisfying the upper division general education requirement with a cluster, you must also complete at least one writing intensive course in your cluster.

8. ARE YOU PLANNING TO ENROLL IN MASS COMMUNICATION COURSES AT NORFOLK STATE UNIVERSITY?
Be sure that you complete a cross-registration form for the course (AVAILABLE THROUGH YOUR ADVISOR) and that you have met the PRE-REQUISITES for the course. Any 300-400 LEVEL MASS COMM. COURSE taken there may be used in your 18 hours of the upper level Comm. course requirement; The ONLY 200-LEVEL COURSE that may be used is MCM 250 TV PRODUCTION.

9. ARE YOU A MATRICULATED STUDENT HOPING TO TAKE COURSES ELSEWHERE, AND HAVE THOSE COURSE CREDITS TRANSFER TO O.D.U.?
You should check on-line with “Monarch Transfermation” to determine the ODU equivalency of a course you take elsewhere. Any Communication course for transfer may be reviewed for approval by GARY EDGERTON, DEBORAH MELTSNER, or CARLA HARRELL.
If you transferred to O.D.U. any courses as electives (EXAMPLE: PSYC 1**1), and believe the course to be EQUIVALENT to an ODU Course, consult with the appropriate department. Have with you a catalog description of the course from the institution where the course was completed.

10. HAVE YOU CONSIDERED THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM?
Any major/minor with a 2.0 G.P.A. OR BETTER may apply through GARY EDGERTON, the Internship Coordinator, to intern during any semester. Please make sure that you have a CONFIRMED POSITION before enrolling in COMM 368 (3 HOURS may count towards your 18 ELECTIVE HOURS in the Major). Internships are available at most local TV and RADIO stations as well as many PROMOTIONAL/PUBLIC RELATIONS organizations. You should consult with GARY by the mid-point of the semester prior to the semester in which you wish to intern. One internship (3 credits) may be applied towards your upper level hours in the Communication major.

11. IF YOU ARE APPROACHING GRADUATION, HAVE YOU CONSIDERED GRADUATE SCHOOL?
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) information is available in the Registrar's Office, Old Administration Building. Have you considered the services offered by the Career Planning and Placement (located in Webb Center)? This office offers Resume Writing Workshops, Employer Interviews, Career Counseling, and has Literature concerning careers.

12. ARE YOU FAMILIAR WITH THE ACCELERATED BACHELOR’S/MASTER’S DEGREE IN COMMUNICATION (through the Humanities Program)?
Students qualified to participate in this program are eligible to complete up to 12 credit hours at the 500 level as an undergraduate. These credit hours apply to both the undergraduate and graduate degrees. Interested students should contact Dr. Jeff Jones in Communication and/or Dr. Dana Heller in the Humanities Institute for further information.

13. IN EXAMINING YOUR LIFE HERE AT ODU, ARE YOU AN AWARE AND ACTIVE STUDENT?
Are you not only completing the required 120 hours towards graduation, but are you also active in various Campus Activities and Organizations? Possibilities include: The Communication Club, The Forensics Team, The Theater Ensemble, WODU Radio Station, and The Mace and Crown. Have you considered Study Abroad? Check out opportunities in the Dragas Center on 49th Street.

Be aware, also, that our department has a chapter of LAMBDA PI ETA, the National Communication Honor Society, for which you may qualify. This organization recognizes those Majors who have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, a GPA in the Major of at least 3.25, have completed at least 60 total credit hours and at least 12 credit hours in the major. An Induction Ceremony for new members takes place annually.

14. DO YOU KNOW THAT IF YOU HAVE A CUMULATIVE GPA OF 3.25 AND A G.P.A. IN THE MAJOR OF 3.5 THAT YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO OBTAIN AN HONOR'S DEGREE IN COMMUNICATION?
Consult with your advisor for other eligibility requirements.

15. DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU MUST APPLY FOR GRADUATION?
Students now apply for graduation via O.D.U.’s web site (go to Academic Resources, then Office of the Registrar, then Graduation Procedures).

THE DEPARTMENT CERTIFIES YOU FOR graduation for departmental requirements for your major and, if relevant, for your cluster; A CERTIFICATION FORM IS COMPLETED BY YOUR ADVISOR. A COPY FOR YOUR RECORDS IS AVAILABLE (SEE YOUR ADVISOR).

VERY IMPORTANT: Please meet with an advisor in your MINOR department (if relevant) to have the certification for graduation form completed for your minor (you will not graduate without this form submitted). Reminder: You must have completed 120 credit hours to graduate.

16. DO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE REQUIRED TO TAKE THE UNIVERSITY ASSESSMENT?
This is to be taken during the SEMESTER OF YOUR GRADUATION. You are able to take this assessment on-line. This is not a test, but is, rather an assessment instrument that must be completed as a requirement for Graduation. The assessment takes about 30 minutes to complete.

17. REMEMBER: THE COMPLETION OF ALL REQUIREMENTS TOWARDS GRADUATION IS ULTIMATELY THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT.
Read your catalog, consult with your advisor, ask questions, and be informed! Make sure that you meet with your advisor each semester to have your advising block removed in order to register for classes, having reviewed your requirements as well as the schedule of classes for the upcoming semester(s), available on-line through Leo. Do not wait until exam week to do this!!

18. When being advised for future semesters, PLEASE INDICATE THAT YOU HAVE REVIEWED THESE GUIDELINES AND UNDERSTAND ALL REQUIREMENTS BY SIGNING A RECEIVED ADVISING INFORMATION FORM PROVIDED BY YOUR ADVISOR.
