Bachelor of Arts - Theatre and Dance Major
Dance Emphasis
The requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in theatre/dance with a dance emphasis are as follows:
1. ENGL 111C, HIST 111C or PHIL
111C.
2. C S 101D, 149D, ISYS 100D, 201D, or OTS 251D
3. COMM 101R, 103R or 112R.
4. DANC 350, 360, 370, 389U, 393, 489 and THEA 241A.
5. Minimum of 26 hours of technique to include 12 hours of ballet and
12 hours of modern dance and 2 hours of either ballet, modern or jazz..
Activities courses may not be used to fulfill these requirements.
6. Minimum of three hours of practicum experience to include two hours
of repertory and performance and one hour of senior project.
7. Minimum of eight hours of theatre and dance electives (not to exceed
four hours of technique.)
8. COMM 200S is required to fulfill a portion of the social science
requirement.
9. As a prerequisite to graduation, dance majors must achieve 400-level
proficiency in ballet technique and modern technique.
Specifically, dance majors must pass DANC 404 and 414.
10. The continued maintenance of technical proficiency is required. For
further information, consult the dance handbook.
Dance Education Emphasis
Dance Education Emphasis* Students must achieve passing scores on the Praxis I exam as a prerequisite for entry into teacher education.
The requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in theatre/dance with a dance education emphasis are as follows:
1. ENGL 111C, HIST 111C or PHIL
111C.
2. C S 101D, 149D, ISYS 100D, 201D, or OTS 251D
3. COMM 101R, 103R or 112R.
A total of 74 hours in Dance, Theatre and professional courses is
required.
A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for the degree.
Dance Concentration Requirements
(43 hours).
12 hours from DANC 201, 302, 303, 404, 405, or 406;
10 hours from DANC 211, 312, 313, 414, 415, or 416; DANC 321, 322, 350,
360, 370, 387, 388, 389U, 393, 489, 499;
2-3 hours from THEA 244, 247, or 248.
Professional Education Requirements
(30 hours).
ECI 297, 300, 412, 483, 485; ESSE 400; PHYS 105; PE 217 and 340.

Theatre and Dance Minors
Minor in Theatre and Dance - Theatre Specialization
For a minor in theatre arts with a theatre specialization, the student must complete a minimum of 18 THEA hours, including:
1. THEA 241A as a
prerequisite to the minor.
2. Minimum of 12 hours at the
300 and 400 levels, with prior agreement by the department.
Students must complete a minimum
of six hours in upper-level courses in the minor requirement at Old
Dominion University.
Minor in Theatre and Dance - Dance Specialization
For a minor in theatre arts with a dance specialization, the student must complete 18 DANC hours including:
1. DANC 185A as a
prerequisite to the minor..
2. Minimum of 12 hours at the
300 and 400 levels with prior agreement by the department.
Students must complete a minimum
of six hours in upper-level courses in the minor requirement at Old
Dominion University.
