Remembering Joong Fang
It is with regret and sadness that I note the passing of Dr. Joong Fang [Old Dominion University magazine, summer 2010].

As an undergraduate science student in the mid-’70s, I was required to take his class in Introductory Logic. I shall never forget his very first words as he introduced himself to the class: “My name Dr. Joong Fang ... I North Korean ... Start hate me now.”

Thus it was that with this opening remark he began to challenge us to recognize and to question our cultural and ethnic biases, as well as our ability to think rationally. (That so few of us took the lesson to heart is another story.) Only years (decades?) later did I fully come to appreciate his attempts to instill in our largely unformed (and uninformed) minds the importance of questioning and testing the validity of our heretofore unquestioned Absolute Truths. He will be missed.

“Save A Tree”: Thanks For Green Alternative
I’ve worked for the Environmental Protection Agency as a consultant or federal employee since 1986 (except for a couple of years home w/baby), and it greens my heart to see my alma mater and “hometown” university embrace eco-friendly practices.

Please add me to the list of alums requesting the PDF version of the alumni magazine. Many thanks for this effort. I will miss the paper, but we would miss trees even more.
