FACULTY
Leon Wang
Leon Ru-Liang Wang, 73, professor emeritus of civil engineering, died Oct. 25, 2006, after battling metastatic kidney cancer.

Wang joined the ODU faculty in 1984 and retired in 1995. He served as department chair from 1984-90.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Wang; three children, Frank Wang, Mark Wang and Cindy Chao; and seven grandchildren.

After completing his doctorate from MIT in 1965, Wang dedicated his life to being an educator and researcher. He served many years as president of the Eastern Virginia chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA/EVC).

Memorial contributions may be made to his latest community service interest, which was to raise funds to build a national Organization of Chinese Americans center in Washington, D.C. Contributions may be made to OCA/EVC, P.O. Box 924, Yorktown, VA 23692. Condo-lences may be sent to www.mem.com.

Sondra F. Swift
Sondra Anne Ford “Sandy” Swift (M.A. ’70), 68, a longtime adjunct instructor in the English department, died Nov. 9, 2006, after suffering a stroke.

A favorite among students, she taught 19 years at Old Dominion, including both Honors College and general-education English courses.

Her interests were many. She loved making puppets and dolls, and building elaborate stages for them to perform upon. She was a student of Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and wrote poetry and literary criticism. She especially enjoyed her activities with the International Association for the Fantastic in the Arts.

Survivors include her husband, Donald J.P. Swift, eminent scholar of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences at ODU; daughters, Etain Anne Swift and Cecilia Jane Swift Petretto ’96; and three grandchildren.
