Frequently Asked Questions

Employer Intern/Co-op

How long is a work semester?
10-15 weeks.

Can I hire an intern/co-op at any time?
Credit for internships and co-ops is awarded one semester at a time. It is preferable to hire a student at or near the beginning of a semester and employ them through to the end.

How do I post a job?
If you already have an account in CareerLink please login at any time to post your internships opportunitites. If you do not please contact your college liaison to discuss the process.

How many hours can a student work?
Part time positions are normally 15-30 hours per week and full time 31-40 hours.

Can I keep an Intern for longer than one semester?
Yes, although if you want a student for several semesters you may want to consider a parallel co-op model.

What if the student doesn't work out?
Internships and co-ops are learning experiences. If a student is not performing we would suggest that they be given specific feedback on their performance and a detailed plan put in place for improvement. We can assist with this if you like. Should the student fail to improve an employer is under no obligation to continue to offer employment.

Are there unpaid internships?
Yes. Review the United States Department of Labor Fact Sheet #71: Internship Programs Under The Fair Labor Standards Act

How much do paid interns make?
Students are paid $8.00 - $25.00 per hour, depending on the employer, position, major and level of the student.
