Old Dominion University will, under special circumstances, offer one- and
two-year special contracts for academic (non-tenure track) teaching faculty
positions. These appointments may be made without a formal search. The maximum
number of consecutive years these contracts may be offered to any given individual
will be three years. An appointee is eligible to compete for a renewable position in a formal search. Special circumstances include: Funding difficulties that limit long-term commitments Unexpected employment situations such as deaths, resignations, failed
searches Unexpected enrollment increases Time and timing required to plan for a programmatic change, to define
a new or revised plan or position
All special appointments must be recommended by the appropriate chair and
dean and be approved by the provost and vice president for academic affairs.
