Graduate Teacher Assistant Instructor (GTAI) Institute

Time:Registration - 7:45 ; Program - 8:25 - 2:30

All GTA Instructors are required to pass the Graduate Teaching Assistant Instructor Institute (GTAI Institute) in order to receive a GTA stipend. The GTAI Institute will provide you with procedural and practical information that will enhance and guide your teaching skills and success. It is made up of the University portion and the college portion. You must attend both portions to pass the institute.

Who Should Attend:
GTA Instructors who will directly communicate and interact with students in ways that will lead to the conveyance of knowledge or skills. All GTAI's are required to successfully complete GTAI Institute. Included in this category are graduate students who serve as instructors, laboratory supervisors, recitation leaders and tutors. You must become certified through the GTAI Institute before you can teach!

Who Should NOT Attend:
GTA Assistants who do not directly instruct or interact with students. Included in this category are GTA's who serve as graders, help the instructor research articles and materials to be used by the instructor in preparing lectures or handouts, or as laboratory assistants who prepare equipment solutions, etc.

How to sign up:
Have your Graduate Program Director (GPD) contact Missy Barber in the Office of Graduate Studies via email at mbarber@odu.edu. To process your registration, the following information needs to be provided:

  1. Your Name
  2. Your UIN
  3. College and Program
  4. Your ODU email address (so that you can receive IMPORTANT institute info)

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS:If you are an international student, and/or English is not your first language, you must have obtained a minimum score of 50 on the SPEAK test or a minimum score of 26 on the speaking portion of the internet Based TOEFL (iBT) in order to qualify for registration in the GTAI Institute. If you have not taken the SPEAK Test, one will be offered on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. You must register for the SPEAK test in person at the English Language Center. If you fail the SPEAK Test with a score of 45 you have another opportunity to pass by attending the retake SPEAK Test on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 in Kaufman 100 at 1:00. You will be required to develop an oral presentation using power point to present an 8-10 minute lesson to a small panel of faculty members. They will determine if you are qualified to attend the GTAI Institute. The topic is your choice; however, the topic should be chosen within your discipline. It would be more meaningful and useful if you choose a topic you are likely to teach or work with in your new responsibilities.
