Old Dominion will honor Spc. William K. Middleton, who was killed in combat operations in Afghanistan in November, during a ceremony on Kaufman Mall at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 27. Known to his family and friends as Kyle, the Richmond, Va., native was a member of the ODU class of 2007 and had served in the Army since 2009. (Full Story)

Old Dominion is partnering with ABC's "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition," an Emmy Award-winning reality television program, to help local families in need. In two weeks, a crew from the television show will surprise a deserving Hampton Roads family with the news that they have been selected for a new home, and ODU is organizing volunteers to assist in the construction. A BBC crew recently visited ODU, as well as an area middle school and high school, to develop a documentary on the U.S. Department of Defense's Troops to Teachers (TTT) initiative after learning about it through national news stories citing Owings' research on former members of the military who have entered the teaching profession. An initiative similar to TTT is being considered in Great Britain.
