Patrick Hatcher, the ODU faculty member who serves as executive director of the Virginia Coastal Energy Research Consortium, praised the announcement Monday by the Obama administration of new research funding and expedited environmental assessments for wind farms off the coasts of Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey. Oceanographer Michael Dinniman breathed a sigh of relief when he got word in late January that a research vessel near the Antarctic coast had recovered SG503. After all, he had built up something close to affection for the plucky "Ice Dragon" while he was in Antarctica for most of the month of November. (Full Story)

Retired Lt. Col. James G. Zumwalt, left, guest speaker for the Friends of the Libraries program Tuesday night, chats with Charles Burgess, professor emeritus of English, and his wife, Elisabeth, during a reception at the President's House prior to his talk.
