Engineering Prof Studying Effects of Lightning Strikes on Passenger Planes

Passenger airplanes used to be made almost exclusively of aluminum or other metals, and aviation experts could predict how a highly charged bolt of lightning would travel through the fuselage after a strike. But what happens when the body of these passenger jets is made increasingly from plastic composite materials? (Full Story)

Patricia Duncan and Kyle Nelson, students in Kim Baskette's Technology and Your World class (STEM 110), are taped Tuesday for a promo in WAVY-TV's Wait to Text community awareness campaign. WAVY is handing out blue thumb bands with the message W82TXT to remind people not to text while behind the wheel. Baskette polled her students to see if they would sign a pledge not to text while driving, and when the vast majority said yes, she contacted WAVY. Nineteen of her students were also taped for a group promo. The spots will begin airing next week.
