Chinese Embassy Delegation Meets with ODU Officials

Old Dominion's China Center hosted a visit from a three-member delegation from the Chinese Embassy in Washington Oct. 23-24, including Professor Fang Maotian, minister counselor of education.

The delegation was given tours of both the city of Norfolk and the ODU campus. They met with President John Broderick and Provost Carol Simpson, along with other vice presidents and deans. Simpson hosted a dinner reception for the delegation.

Charles Wilson, interim dean of the College of Arts and Letters, hosted a lunch with the deans and a reception for ODU faculty, students, representatives of local school districts and other members of the local community.

It is hoped that the visit by the Chinese Embassy officials will lead to additional resources for funding more China Center programs that will benefit ODU faculty, students and the local community.

Qiu Jin is the director of the ODU China Center. She is also an associate professor of history and international studies and the director of the ODU Institute of Asian Studies.

The mission of the China Center is to promote and coordinate research, cultural exchanges and academic programs in China-related studies; to enhance mutual understanding of the two cultures; and to facilitate economic and business cooperation between China, other Chinese societies and the United States, with particular emphases on the commonwealth of Virginia.
