Perhaps the greatest tribute paid to Beth Anders, after leading her field hockey team to a ninth national championship Nov. 19 at Foreman Field, came from opposing coach Karen Shelton. "I wish I knew her secret," said Shelton, whose North Carolina squad fell 3-1 to Old Dominion in the title game. "I am always amazed at the way she prepares her teams, and how well they play with such emotion and fire." Anders, the winningest field hockey coach in NCAA history, credited her team with a gutsy performance. "I'm so proud of my kids. They played with all their hearts, they played hard and never quit," she said. The Lady Monarchs finished the season with a 25-1 record.
