Framed by two of the flagpoles on Kaufman Mall, reminiscent of the Twin Towers, these students pause to reflect on the lives lost on 9/11 following a university ceremony on the fifth anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Nearly 3,000 flags representing each victim were planted on the lawn. Four of the flags commemorate the memories of Old Dominion alumnus Navy Cmdr. Robert Schlegel and graduate students Navy Lt. Cmdr. Robert Elseth, Army Lt. Col. Karen Wagner and Army Spec. Four Craig Amundson, all of whom died in the attack on the Pentagon. President Roseann Runte read a poem she wrote to commemorate the fifth anniversary, “Twin Towers, 2006,” and Master Sgt. Richard C. Burnette, a new Army ROTC instructor, gave remarks at the program.
