Updates & Reminders
10 October 2012
Graduating in December?: We have a specific checklist for everything graduating students need to keep in mind--including how to invite family and friends. There is a lot to do in your department to prepare for graduation but ALL students--no matter the visa status--must submit a Program Departure Form in the following cases:
-
ALL STATUSES: when they leave ODU permanently without completing their degree
-
ALL STATUSES: upon graduation and departure from ODU
-
ALL STATUSES: when there is a change to another status and you depart the university
-
F-1s: when OPT is finished and the student is leaving the U.S. and/or when there is a change to another status
Graduate Students & Academic Suspension: Please note that ISSS has instituted a new policy regarding academic suspension appeals for graduate students. ISSS is notified of suspensions but not of approved appeals. Upon notification your suspension, we will contact you via e-mail and you have two weeks from the date of the e-mail from ISSS. to submit your appeal in accordance with procedures determined by the Office of Graduate Studies If we do not hear back from you and receive subsequent follow-ups/documentation of an approval or denial, we will be forced to terminate your visa record.
Practical Training Workshops for F-1s: Will you be applying for an off-campus internship (Curricular Practical Training (CPT)) next semester? What about going out to get some post-graduation employment experience on Optional Practical Training (OPT)? If so, you'll need to sign up for the required workshops (on the linked pages)--especially if you're graduating in December and want to do OPT. NOTE: You are only eligible to attend the workshop if you are an F-1 and if you have been a full-time student for six months.
Bringing Over Dependents?: If you are an F-1 or J-1 and would like to bring over your spouse and/or children, please note that there has been a change in our processing. It is no longer necessary to make an appointment with your ISSS advisor. For more information on how to bring over F-2s/J-2s, visit our page for that purpose.
Important Dates List: We have a list of important dates geared toward international students on our web site. Check it out to be sure you are aware of deadlines and such.
Be Proactive, Be Protected!: There will be a self-defense workshop for women on Wed., 17 October; registration is required. In addition, the World Bank has sent us info that their scholarship application process will begin in mid-October.
Appointment Tool: We have had some difficulties with our appointment tool and, as a workaround, ask that you e-mail us to set up an appointment with an advisor. Please include the following information when you send your request:
We hope you enjoyed Fall Break!
