APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS
JOHN BRODERICK, president, elected chairman of the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education board of directors, effective July 1.
SANDRA WATERS, assistant dean of University College, appointed to chair of the Emerging Leaders Program Advisory Board of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). She will assume this role in October and serve in the position until October 2012.
AWARDS/HONORS
LUCIEN LOMBARDO, professor of sociology and criminal justice, a Governor's Advisory Board on Child Abuse and Neglect award for his outstanding advocacy for children.
ALLA ZAREVA, assistant professor of English, a 2010 Summer Research Fellowship from ODU.
BOOKS
FRANK SPELLMAN, adjunct instructor of community and environmental health, "Geography for Nongeographers" (Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2010).
BURTON ST. JOHN III, assistant professor of communication, and Jack Rosenberry of St. John Fisher College in Rochester, N.Y., editors, "Public Journalism 2.0: The Promise and Reality of a Citizen-Engaged Press" (Routledge, 2009). St. John also contributed essays for the book.

PUBLICATIONS
KENT CARPENTER, professor of biological sciences, co-author of "Global Biodiversity: Indicators of Recent Declines" in the April 29 issue of the journal Science. He is one of more than 40 co-authors of the article, whose lead author is Stuart H.M. Butchart.
JOANNA ELEFTHERIOU, adjunct assistant professor of English, an essay, "The Other Side," in the summer/fall 2009 issue of The Crab Orchard Review; an essay, "Moonlight," in the spring 2010 issue of Chautauqua; and a short fiction piece, "Reunion," in the spring 2010 issue of Apalachee Review.
ALLA ZAREVA, assistant professor of English, "Multicompetence and L2 Users' Associative Links: Being Unlike Nativelike" in vol. 2, no. 22 of International Journal of Applied Linguistics.
