ODU Engineering Doctoral Grad Tapped to Lead VMI Civil Engineering Department
An Old Dominion University doctoral graduate in water resources engineering has been named head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington.
Capt. John E. Riester Jr. was installed in the position April 1.
Riester earned his Ph.D. from ODU in 1993. A 1978 graduate of VMI, Riester was a distinguished visiting professor in civil engineering at the U.S. Air Force Academy.
He received VMI's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1999, and is known as a popular and effective teacher who devotes a great deal of energy to recruiting and retaining civil and environmental engineering majors.
Riester has also organized VMI cadet participation in the Society of Women Engineers annual conferences since 2001.
