OLD DOMINION MUSIC DEPARTMENT REMEMBERS CUCCHIARI-LORING
A memorial service for Claire Cucchiari-Loring will be held Tuesday, Dec. 12, in the Chandler Recital Hall where she sang as an Old Dominion University music student.
The service, which will begin at 11 a.m., will be open to family and close friends of Cucchiari-Loring and to members of the university's music department and organizations to which the student belonged.
Cucchiari-Loring was killed at a Chesapeake shopping center Dec. 8 by an estranged boyfriend, who then took his own life. The victim was a senior at ODU.
"We are deeply saddened. Claire was an outstanding student in our music program," said Roseann Runte, ODU president. "She will be greatly missed by many faculty, staff and students whose lives she touched."
John Toomey, professor of music who taught Cucchiari-Loring in several classes, said she had "a beautiful, natural voice, a wonderful gift."
Cucchiari-Loring performed numerous times with the ODU Jazz Ensemble and was a member of the ODU Jazz Choir.
In lieu of flowers, Cucchiari-Loring's family has requested donations be made in her name to Samaritan House, a local organization that assists domestic violence victims with shelter, education, counseling and support. Donations can be made by calling 631-0710. For more information about Samaritan House, visit the Web site http://www.samaritanhouseva.org/index.html.
