ODU's 'In Support of Children' Sponsors Lecture on Childhood Trauma Tonight

As part of Old Dominion University's In Support of Children Education Series, John Briere, M.D., will speak on the topic, "Experiencing Trauma in Childhood: Personal and Social Effects and What Individuals and Communities Can Do to Prevent It and Help Those Who Suffer," at 7 p.m. tonight in the Hampton/Newport News Room of Webb University Center. The lecture is free and open to the public.

An internationally recognized author and speaker on the experience and treatment of trauma experienced in childhood, Briere is an associate professor of psychiatry and psychology at the University of Southern California's Keck School of Medicine. He also serves as director of the Psychological Trauma Program of Los Angeles County and USC Medical Center, and is co-director of the MCAVIC-USC Child and Adolescent Trauma Program.

He is a member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network and past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS). Briere received the Robert S. Laufer Memorial Award for Scientific Achievement from ISTSS and the Outstanding Professional Award from the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children.

Designated as a "Highly Cited Researcher" by the Institute for Scientific Information, Briere is the author or co-author of more than 70 articles, 20 chapters and encyclopedia entries, 10 books and eight psychological tests in the areas of trauma, child abuse and interpersonal violence.
