ODU Brass Choir in Concert Tonight
Old Dominion University's Brass Choir will perform a concert titled "Surely, You Jest!" at 7:30 p.m. this evening in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center. It is free and open to the public.
The program will include works by Bach, Kevin Kaisershot, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Wilke Renwick and others.
The ODU Brass Choir, which performed continuously from 1972-2005 under the direction of William Bartolotta, has been under the direction of Mike Hall since 2006. An assistant professor of trombone/euphonium and brass chamber music at ODU, he also serves as literature reviews editor for the International Trombone Association Journal.
Hall has performed extensively throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe and China, playing a range of styles and literature with symphony orchestras, wind and chamber ensembles and as featured soloist. He also has an extensive background in commercial music backing entertainers, playing in large and small-group jazz settings, and performing in theater and studio recording ensembles.
His extensive study of Baroque performance practice as applied to low brass instruments has led to three solo recordings: Arcangelo Corelli Solo Chamber Sonatas, Opus 5; J.S. Bach: The Gamba Sonatas and Benedetto Marcello Solo Sonatas, Opus 1. Hall is a C.G. Conn and Selmer Bach performing artist.
The ODU Brass Choir plays works written specifically for brass as well as arrangements of choral, orchestral, jazz, pop and show music. Performances are given regularly on and off campus featuring student and guest artist soloists. The choir often divides into smaller groups to perform chamber music, as for tonight's performance.
Upcoming Brass Choir events include a concert with Richmond Symphony trumpeter Mary Bowden when she presents a free solo recital at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 31, in Chandler Recital Hall. The choir's final performance of the semester will be on April 13.
