Fans Invited to Join Monarchs for NCAA Selection Sunday Event in Webb Center
Will it be a trip to Buffalo or San Jose? Spokane or New Orleans?
The Old Dominion University men's basketball team clinched a spot in the NCAA Tournament on Monday night by winning the Colonial Athletic Association championship, 60-53 over William and Mary. Now the players and coaches, and ODU's thousands of fans, are waiting anxiously for Selection Sunday, March 14.
That's when the 65-team field for the NCAA Tournament will be announced, and when the Monarchs find out who they play, and where, in the first round.
The ODU athletic department is inviting staff, students and other fans from the area to join the team in the Webb Center food court at 5:30 p.m. Sunday to watch the announcement on TV. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.
Pundits who handicap the field are projecting Old Dominion to be seeded anywhere from 8th to 11th in one of the four regions. That would project to ODU playing a team such as the Texas Longhorns, or California Bears, or even fellow smaller-conference team the Gonzaga Bulldogs.
After the field of 65 is announced, between 6:30-7 p.m. Sunday, the ODU team will make its travel plans to head to one of eight sites for the first- and second-round games. The closest prospective site is Providence, R.I. But the team could end up traveling as far away as Spokane, Wash., or San Jose, Calif. Other possible venues include Buffalo, N.Y., and New Orleans.
After three years of not qualifying for "March Madness," however, the Monarchs won't mind the trip at all - wherever they end up.
