ODU education students share service-learning project with Boys & Girls Clubs

Science and art came together this semester for more than 30 Old Dominion University pre-service students enrolled in teacher education courses at the Virginia Beach Higher Education Center (VBHEC), resulting in a project for which they designed learning activities for youngsters, in essence extending the university classroom to the community.

The result of the students' collaboration is a program called "Discovering Science Through Art," which they will present this month at the Boys & Girls Clubs at Rosemont Unit. The program incorporates digital movies to facilitate inquiry and explore concepts such as change, balance, adaptation and habitats, all embedded in the Virginia Standards of Learning, explained Linda Pond, lecturer of STEM and professional studies and of two ODU faculty members who taught course modules at the VBHEC.

The project began earlier in the semester with a partnership at the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center, where the future teachers conducted research, linking science concepts with hands-on inquiry and art exploration.

They will share the program they created with dozens of students at the Boys & Girls Clubs the evening of March 24 and 31.

"The collaboration of science and art education students allows for fusion of knowledge, solutions and cross-curricula understandings," said Pond, who, together with art lecturer Patty Edwards, taught the course modules.

The program their students designed coincides with Youth Art Month.

"'Discovering Science Through Art' aims to allow youngsters to ponder, engage in hands-on exploration and make meaningful connections through science and art," added Edwards.

She credited the supportive partnerships ODU has with the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center and the Boys & Girls Clubs, Rosemont Unit, under the direction of Debbie McGaughey.
