Three ODU Students Selected for Prestigious NASA Internships

Three Old Dominion University students have been selected to work as interns during the spring session of the Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars (LARSS) program at NASA Langley Research Center.

The three interns are John Gardner, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in aerospace engineering in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology; Zachary Shiferl, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering with a minor in aerospace engineering from Battenl; and Sherri Mitchell, a graduate student in elementary education in the Darden College of Education.

The LARSS program provides paid internship opportunities year round for rising undergraduate juniors and seniors as well as graduate students during spring, summer or fall sessions. Participants gain exciting hands-on research experience while working side-by-side with NASA's finest scientists and engineers who serve as mentors at NASA Langley.

Gardner said he applied for the internship so he could have "real world experience in a research environment.

"I am looking forward to implementing the technical and research skills I learn here at NASA to my future career," Gardner said.

Mitchell, who plans on becoming an educator, said she applied for the internship because "the opportunities at NASA are endless.

"I want to be a part of that, and I want my students to be a part of the opportunities NASA offers as well," said Mitchell.

Schiferl said he's always wanted to work in the aerospace industry, and that an internship at NASA would be invaluable to his future.

He is looking forward to the hands-on experience he will gain and the chance to network with peers and mentors.
