Renowned Musician at ODU for Jazz Residency

Jazz saxophonist Ada Rovatti has been directing jazz clinics, master classes and open rehearsals at Old Dominion University all this week, which will culminate with an ODU Jazz Ensemble concert Sunday, April 11, and a Diehn Concert Series performance Monday, April 12.

Following years of classical piano training, Italian native Rovatti started playing saxophone in high school. After winning a scholarship from Berklee College of Music in Italy, she divided her time between Boston, where she studied with Joe Viola and George Garzone, and Italy, where she worked in big bands with such guest artists as Phil Woods, Lee Konitz, Bob Mintzer and Randy Brecker.

She has performed in important festivals such as JVC Jazz Festival in New York City, Rochester Jazz Festival and Detroit Jazz Fest. Rovatti also has performed with an impressive and diverse list of artists and bands, including Mike Stern, Miroslav Vitous, John McLaughlin, Anne Ducros, Victor Bailey, Rodney Holmes, Joanne Brackeen and Eddie Henderson. With talent not limited to music, Rovatti appeared in the movie "Mona Lisa Smile" with Julia Roberts.

Three jazz clinics are being offered to ODU students during her residency, all of which are free and open to the public to attend. For more information, call 683-4061.
