SIAM Conference Saturday Bringing Math Researchers and Professionals from Mid-Atlantic to ODU
Researchers and professionals with a keen interest in mathematics will gather on the Old Dominion University campus Saturday, April 10, for the annual SIAM (Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics) Conference celebrating Math Awareness Month.
Michael D. Weiss, a mathematician and economist who served from 1976-1997 on the staff of the Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, will deliver the conference's main address: "Food, Farms and Function Spaces: A Mathematical Approach to Problems of Agriculture." Weiss, who also was on mathematics faculty of Wayne State University, is currently an independent consultant.
The event, which runs from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and includes a dinner, also features an opening keynote address by John Adam, the ODU University professor of mathematics and author of "A Mathematical Nature Walk" (2009) and "Mathematics in Nature: Modeling Patterns in the Natural World" (2003), both from Princeton University Press.
In addition, Paul Staneski, an ODU mathematics alumnus who works for Credit Suisse Securities, will be the lead speaker at the Alumni Speaker Session. This session provides an opportunity to for alumni to network and discuss their mathematics-related careers.
The day sessions of the conference, which is sponsored by the SIAM Student Chapter at ODU, the Southeastern Atlantic Section of SIAM and the ODU Alumni Association, will be in Constant Hall. The registration fee, which includes breakfast and dinner, is $5 for students and $15 for others. The dinner and closing remarks will be held in Webb Center.
Manasi Sheth, a graduate teaching assistant in the ODU Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the president of the SIAM Student Chapter, said the organizers are expecting conference participants from colleges, universities and businesses throughout Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.
The conference will include numerous small presentations and a poster session allowing participants to present their research.
In addition to Sheth, members of the event committee are Candice Rockell, John Gounley, Shu Liao and Michael Pohrivchak. For more information, contact Sheth at firstname.lastname@example.org or 683-3910.
