Shuman Appointed Interim Dean of Health Sciences
Deanne Shuman, acting chair of the School of Dental Hygiene at Old Dominion University, has been appointed interim dean of the College of Health Sciences, beginning July 25, announced Provost Carol Simpson.
Andrew Balas, who earlier announced his intention to step down as dean, will return to a faculty position in the School of Community and Environmental Health.
A member of the ODU faculty since 1976, Shuman brings considerable experience to the role, including having served as acting dean in 2005. She is currently the acting chair of the School of Dental Hygiene.
Shuman is the author of more than 20 refereed articles and a member of the Advisory Board of The Journal of Contemporary Dental Practice.
She received bachelor's and master's degrees in dental hygiene, and a doctorate in urban services, all from ODU.
The university is working with an external search agency to identify and recruit candidates for the dean of health sciences position. It is anticipated that leading candidates will visit ODU during the fall 2010 semester and that a new dean will be recruited to begin in January 2011.
