ODU Staffers Host National Conference of Scientific Materials Managers
Months of planning and preparations by two Old Dominion University staff members are coming to fruition this week with the rollout of the 37th annual National Association of Scientific Materials Managers (NAOSMM) Conference and Trade Show at the Norfolk Marriott Waterside.
Mary Hayward, laboratory manager for the Biological Sciences Support Facility, and Tammy Subotich, senior laboratory specialist for the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, are cohosts of the conference, which is expected to attract about 125 participants. The conference, which began with social events on Sunday, July 25, extends through Friday.
"This conference has always been supportive in finding practical solutions to numerous federal safety and regulatory actions," Hayward said. One participant in this year's conference is the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. "We, as a group, assist them in real-life actions as much as they assist us in understanding new regulations," Hayward added.
In addition to laboratory managers, NAOSMM also counts among its members science storeroom personnel, teaching lab coordinators, purchasing personnel, chemical safety officers, and other representatives of universities, manufacturers, research laboratories and pharmaceutical companies. The professional organization was founded in 1974.
Seminars during the conference will explore issues such as chemical waste disposal, science stockroom organization, classification and labeling of chemicals, gas management systems with analytical and cryogenic applications, purchasing tactics for the science materials manager, organization of a forensic lab, effective chemical hygiene and general lab safety procedures.
The trade show portion of the conference is Tuesday, July 27, from 1:30 to 5 p.m., and Wednesday, July 28, from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Marriott Waterside's Norfolk Ballroom.
Hayward said that the public may attend the trade show free of charge. A list of the exhibitors of lab equipment and supplies is at http://www.naosmm.org/confer/norfolk/tradeshow.html.
