Public Invited to Governor's Town Hall Meeting at ODU Aug. 9
Old Dominion University will be the site of a town hall meeting with Gov. Bob McDonnell on Monday Aug. 9, in North Cafe in Webb Center.
The 90-minute forum, part of a series of events being held statewide, will offer Virginians a chance to speak directly with the governor about issues facing the commonwealth, such as the initiative to privatize Virginia's state-run ABC stores and efforts to create jobs.
The ODU event, which runs from 7-8:30 p.m., is the second of eight town hall meetings McDonnell is holding across the state, a series called "Virginia Speaks: A Conversation About Jobs, Government Reform and Our Future." The meetings started Aug. 4 in Roanoke and conclude Aug. 31 in Bristol.
"I've served in elected office for 18 years. During that time I have consistently found that the best ideas don't come from Richmond, they come from Virginians in communities statewide," McDonnell said. "We are focused on reforming state government to make it simpler, smaller and more efficient. To best accomplish this goal we must hear from the citizens who own that government, and who deal with it on a daily basis."
At ODU, McDonnell will be joined by cabinet secretaries and administration officials. The meeting is free and open to the public and will be streamed live on the Web at http://dl.odu.edu/tools/vstream/govoff/gov_th.php. The session will be rebroadcast Aug. 12 on WHRV-FM, from 12-1 p.m..
As part of the Governor's Commission on Government Reform and Restructuring, McDonnell has made it a priority to privatize Virginia's ABC stores. The issue has been the subject of statewide debate, and was part of the inspiration for the town hall series.
Information gathered at the town hall sessions, and other public events this month, will be included in the final meeting of the Governor's Commission on Government Reform and Restructuring, scheduled for Sept. 13 in Richmond. The commission will issue its interim report Sept. 15.
