Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign Revving Up; All Donors Eligible for Gift Drawings
Old Dominion University's participation in the annual Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC) kicked off Oct. 1, with a goal of raising $116,000 by Nov. 30.
Members of the campus community are being asked for their pledges of support to local United Way agencies as well as a host of other area, state, national and international charitable organizations. "Give from the Heart in 2010" is the theme for the campaign.
Last year, ODU employees contributed $115,869 to the CVC, and this year's volunteer coordinators are hoping for another positive response from the campus community.
"There is no greater way to contribute to your community than through CVC. When you donate to the campaign, you have the opportunity to make a difference for a cause you believe in," said Karen Travis, assistant vice president for community engagement, who heads the ODU campaign.
As an incentive, employees who make a gift (in any amount) in this year's campaign will be entered in drawings to win a basket of ODU merchandise. The first drawing will be held at the end of October and the second at the end of November. Each drawing is open to those who have made a contribution; employees who made their donation during the first month will be entered in the second drawing as well. A final grand prize drawing will take place in December.
Since 1997, Virginia state employees have raised more than $30 million. In the 2009 campaign, more than 19,000 employees gave $3.95 million, including over $65,000 designated to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund through the American Red Cross.
Employees may designate their gift to a specific charity (or multiple charities) or to all the charities in their part of the state. With more than 1,300 charities, there are plenty of choices for employee giving.
The CVC website, http://cvc.vipnet.org/index.html, includes a listing of all of the participating agencies and organizations.
