More Than 1500 Students Expected at ODU Vote Mob for Big Blue Today

Old Dominion University is expecting more than 1,500 students and alumni to participate "Vote Mob" Thursday, Dec. 2 at noon in Webb University Center. The event, which is similar to a "Flash Mob," will allow fans to rally around the university's mascot, Big Blue, who is currently in the semi-finals in the Capital One National Mascot Challenge.

With more than a million votes to date, Blue is in a dead heat competition with University of Oregon's The Duck and this level of competition is sudden death. School spirit is at ODU is at an all time high and with this "Vote Mob" the university hopes to push into the final round of the challenge. Voting for this round closes at 8:59 a.m., Monday, Dec. 6.

The voting frenzy will be shown live on WVEC Channel 13. 

The annual competition, which began in 2002, promotes healthy competition among colleges and universities across the country and often shines the spotlight on many unsung heroes of the college gridiron. Each participating school's mascot receives $5,000 for its university mascot program, and the Capital One National Mascot of the Year receives an additional $15,000 scholarship to help fund its school's mascot program. The winner will be announced at halftime of the Capital One Bowl game, airing on ESPN at 1 p.m. EST from Orlando, Fla., on Jan. 1, 2011.

The Capital One National Mascot of the Year is determined through fan voting. Throughout the college football season fans visit capitalonebowl.com to vote for their favorite All-American Mascot. Voting consists of 12 weekly head-to-furry-head match ups between the All-Americans. The mascots with the best win/loss records face off in online playoffs starting Nov. 22, and the winner will be pronounced Capital One National Mascot of the Year on Jan. 1, 2011 during the Capital One Bowl.
