VETERANS' DAY COMMEMORATION IS TODAY
Old Dominion University faculty, staff and students will commemorate Veterans' Day with a ceremony on Kaufman Mall at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9.
The service will include the laying of a wreath on Old Dominion's Alumni War Memorial plaque by President Roseann Runte and a performance by The Faithful Men, under the direction of Nancy Klein. Red, white and blue ribbons will be distributed to the campus community.
Dana Burnett, professor and chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling in Old Dominion University's Darden College of Education, will be the guest speaker. Burnett served three years in the U.S. Navy on active duty and more than 25 years in the U.S. Naval Reserve, mostly in the Special Boats Unit, before retiring as a captain. He completed two Vietnam tours and was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation Medal.
During the ceremony, Army and Navy ROTC students will participate in "Old Glory," a poignant ritual where each cadet and midshipman passes a folded flag to the next. The flag will be presented to Abigail Wallace, a sophomore Navy ROTC midshipman whose brother Cpl. Matthew Wallace died July 21 as a result of injuries sustained in Iraq.
In the event of inclement weather, the Veterans' Day ceremony will be moved to the North Mall of Webb University Center.
