ODU's Ezell to Speak About Cyber Threats on 'With Good Reason' June 16

When it comes to national security threats, Old Dominion University researcher Barry Ezell says the possibility of cyber attacks keeps him awake at night. Ezell, research associate professor at ODU's Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Center (VMASC), said the computers that control our gas plants, water supply and energy grid are old and unprotected.

Ezell, who was VMASC's project leader on the recently completed full-scale exercise of disaster preparedness by Virginia's Office of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security, will speak about cyber threats as a guest on the radio program "With Good Reason" the week of June 11-17. Locally, the show will air at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 16, on WHRV-FM, 89.5.

Ezell will be joined on the program by other experts in the field of telecommunication threats.

Fellow guest Curtis Holsopple of Virginia State University, a veteran Ham operator, says this simple technology connects users across the globe - and even to astronauts in space.

Also appearing will be David Smith and Jeffrey Plant of the University of Virginia, who are administrators of what's being called the best watershed management tool in existence. The "Bay Game" is a new interactive computer simulation that's teaching students how the decisions of farmers, policymakers and land developers affect the health of water resources like the Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the United States.

"With Good Reason" airs weekly on public radio stations, reaching a diverse audience in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and portions of Maryland, West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Michigan, California and Alaska.

The show is produced for the Virginia Higher Education Broadcasting Consortium by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Other broadcast times and stations are available at http://www.withgoodreasonradio.org/when-to-listen.

Audio files of the full program and its companion news feature will be posted the week of the show to the ODU website. A permanent link can be found here: http://withgoodreasonradio.org/2011/06/radio-emergency/.
