Volunteers Sought for Apple Bagging on Monarch Service Day
One day. Ten thousand apples.
Monarch Service Day, part of Public Service Week at Old Dominion University, is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 12. The College of Business and Public Administration's urban studies and public administration department will host this second annual campus event.
As a campus-wide initiative, members of the ODU community will bag 10,000 apples, donated by local growers, for distribution to area soup kitchens and food banks. The activity takes place from noon to 3 p.m. on Kaufman Mall.
"We have the bags, and the apples coming, but we could really use some help from volunteers," said Tami Park Farinholt, director of the Center for Service and Civic Engagement in ODU's Office of Student Activities and Leadership. "We'd really love to see a good mix of students, faculty, staff and alumni helping bag the apples."
Volunteers will be fed, and will have an opportunity to take part in the growing community spirit that has been building on the campus. Monarch Service Day at ODU is one example of that growth. To volunteer or for more information about the apple-bagging event, call 683-6948 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
All of the university's Public Service Week programs and activities are open to faculty, staff and students as well as Hampton Roads residents. They are intended to energize the ODU community and raise awareness of the importance of public service, and the university's role in public service, in the region. A full week of events is planned, including nationally recognized speakers and other volunteer activities.
Among the Public Service Week highlights will be a talk by keynote speaker Maurice Jones, publisher of The Virginian-Pilot, on Monday, Nov. 7; a Women in Public Service Roundtable, featuring women in higher education, on Tuesday, Nov. 8; and a public service Career Explorium on Thursday, Nov. 10.
