President Broderick Appointed to AASCU Council of State Representatives

Old Dominion University President John Broderick has been appointed to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Council of State Representatives. His term began Jan. 25 and runs through Dec. 31, 2013.

AASCU is a Washington, D.C.-based higher education association of nearly 420 public colleges, universities and systems whose members share a learning- and teaching-centered culture, a historic commitment to underserved student populations and a dedication to research and creativity that advances their regions' economic progress and cultural development.

"I am pleased to welcome and congratulate you on your appointment to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Council of State Representatives. I know you will do an outstanding job representing the institutions in Virginia," Edward Elmendorf, senior vice president for government relations and policy analysis, said in a letter to Broderick.

The Council of State Representatives, which consists of both elected and appointed members, is responsible for helping to formulate and recommend the public policy agenda to the association, and to assist staff in carrying out the agenda through contacts with stakeholders and members. The council serves as an immediate resource for advice when matters of public policy emerge. Council members may be asked to provide quick-turnaround responses on federal or state legislative matters of immediate concern or to advise staff on topical issues of public policy that may affect public colleges and universities.

In addition, the duties of the council responsibilities have been expanded to include a high priority role of observing and providing counsel on state higher education trends and issues.

The next meeting of the council is scheduled to take place March 21-23 in the AASCU offices.
