Tolk Honored for Contributions to Modeling and Simulation Field
Andreas Tolk, professor of engineering management and systems engineering in Old Dominion University's Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology, has received a prestigious award for his contributions to the field of modeling and simulation.
In March, Tolk was honored with the Outstanding Professional Contribution Award from the Society for Modeling and Simulation International (SCS).
In a letter to Tolk, SCS Awards and Recognition Committee chairman Tuncer Oren lauded Tolk's career of work in the field.
"Your worldwide distinguished, outstanding and dedicated technical contributions and services to the modeling and computer simulation discipline, and to the Society, are highly appreciated and well recognized by your peers," Oren wrote.
To be eligible for the Outstanding Professional Contribution Award, a candidate must have contributed to an innovative concept or product, or formulated creative insight which has been embraced by a significant segment of the modeling and simulation community.
Tolk has made significant contributions to better understanding of interoperability of simulation systems and composability of models. His "Levels of Conceptual Interoperability Model (LCIM)," first introduced in 2003, has been referenced in more than 200 journal papers, book chapters and proceedings papers.
Applying these concepts to the development of new standards and improvement of existent standards has led to contributions that resulted in two papers being among the top 10 most downloaded papers of the Journal of Defense Modeling in 2009. Based on this expertise, Tolk has been invited to organize and conduct workshops on these topics in Australia, Singapore, Germany, Turkey and across the United States.
Tolk will receive a plaque at the SummerSim'12 Conference in Genoa, Italy, in July.
