Elkhorn Avenue to Close Permanently to Through Traffic Beginning May 14
As Elkhorn Avenue becomes permanently closed to through traffic beginning Monday, May 14, the Old Dominion University community also should be aware of other upcoming traffic interruptions.
The closure of Elkhorn Avenue to vehicular traffic has been planned for several years, as part of ODU's move to become an increasingly residential campus. However, several alterations will be made to continue to provide vehicle access to ODU buildings and parking lots.
Work began Monday, May 7, to construct a new entrance to Parking Lot 27, at the corner of Elkhorn Avenue and 49th Street, and also to construct a new bus drop-off area north of the Diehn Center for the Performing Arts, along 49th Street. Parking Lot 22, located south of the Diehn Center, will close permanently with the closure of Elkhorn from the north entrance. Overflow parking will be accommodated in Garage E, adjacent to S.B. Ballard Stadium.
Work is expected to be completed by the end of May. While there will be no extended lane closures on 49th Street, periodic closures of one to three hours in duration are expected. To the extent possible, the campus community will be notified of these closures in advance through the Daily Announcements system. In addition to periodic, short-duration lane closures, the campus community should be alert to construction traffic on 49th Street associated with this work.
The most serious disruptions to parking on campus, due to construction work, will be over by the end of summer.
During and after this work, vehicles will be able to access Elkhorn Avenue from the south, via 43rd Street. The Elkhorn Avenue Garage, Lot 38 (behind the Oceanography and Physics Building), Lot 23 (behind the baseball field) and the Oceanography Building loading docks will remain accessible. However, there will be an access control point just past the Lot 23 exit/entrance in the form of a gate or booth. Only authorized vehicles - primarily emergency, delivery and service/state vehicles - will be allowed past the gate.
