ODU OBSERVES FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11 WITH MORNING CEREMONY
Old Dominion University faculty, staff and students joined together on Kauman Mall this morning to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
All flags on campus are lowered to half staff until sunset.
Nearly 3,000 flags line the mall, representing each victim. Four of those flags commemorate the memories of Old Dominion alumnus Navy Cmdr. Robert Schlegel, and graduate students Navy Lt. Cmdr. Robert Elseth, Army Lt. Col. Karen Wagner and Army Spec. Four Craig Amundson, all of whom lost their lives in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon.
President Roseann Runte and Master Sgt. Richard C. Burnette, an instructor with ODU's Army ROTC, gave remarks. Burnette, a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom, received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during combat operations. He was selected as the 2006 Army Times "Soldier of the Year."
The program also featured musical selections by Stephen Carlson and the Diehn Chorale under the direction of Nancy Klein.
