WVEC-TV meteorologist Jeff Lawson will be part of a panel of experts offering advice and information at "Hurricane Preparedness and You," a free symposium Saturday, Sept. 9 at Old Dominion University.

Sponsored by the ODU Town-N-Gown Association, the event will be held from 2-5 p.m. in the Mills Godwin Jr. Building auditorium on the Old Dominion campus. It is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.

In addition to Lawson, the symposium will feature Ron Johnson, associate professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences at ODU, who will give a presentation on the causes and effects of hurricanes.

Jim Talbot, assistant director of emergency preparedness and response for the city of Norfolk, and other experts, will participate in a panel discussion and answer questions on preparations for hurricanes, evacuation plans and emergency response planning and preparation. Representatives from the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, National Weather Service, Norfolk Emergency Services Coordination Center, VDOT Smart Traffic Center and the ODU Police Emergency Team will also be on hand to answer questions and offer advice.

Free parking will be available in Parking Garage B at 43rd Street and Elkhorn Avenue and Parking Lot 20 on 45th Street. Refreshments will be served.

Town-N-Gown is an independent, informal association of men and women dedicated to developing a mutual understanding between Old Dominion and the various civilian and military communities of Hampton Roads.
