ODU SIGNEES WRESTLE WITH NATIONAL SUCCESS

InterMat, the nation's top wrestling Internet resource for collegiate wrestling, released the Junior National All-American signings list on the last day of the 2005 ASICS/Vaughn USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals.

The eight-day tournament brought over 4,000 wrestlers to the Fargodome on the campus of North Dakota State University from July 23-30 and is the world's single largest wrestling event. Boasting the eighth-ranked recruiting class in the nation by InterMat, Old Dominion University's incoming freshman class won more All-American titles than any other college's freshman class, including powerhouses Iowa, Iowa State and Oklahoma State.

While Michigan State claimed the most individual titles, with four titles in both Greco-Roman and freestyle, Old Dominion had four individual wrestlers win five total medals. Cam Watkins and Kevin Harrington were double medalists, holding a medal in both freestyle and Greco Roman. Cornell University, who placed second in the NCAA Tournament in 2004, was next on the list with four All-Americans.

Incoming freshman Cam Watkins of Magruder High School in Maryland finished fifth in Greco-Roman and sixth in freestyle at 135 pounds. Columbia, N.Y., recruit Kevin Harrington finished fourth in Greco-Roman at 189 pounds. He went 2-2 in the freestyle tournament. Ben Fiacco, who signed with the Monarchs in last year's early signing period, finished sixth at 160 pounds. The three-time Georgia state champion was a Cadet freestyle runner-up in 2003. Kaylen Baxter of West Valley High School in Fairbanks, Alaska, went 4-2 in the Greco-Roman competition at 145 pounds, but dropped to 140 for freestyle and finished seventh.

He fell 5-3 in an overtime match to Iowa State-bound Cyler Sanderson, the youngest brother of four-time undefeated NCAA champion Cael Sanderson. The Monarchs also had incoming freshman Bryan LaShomb (Chesapeake, Va.) and Jeff Becker (Slippery Rock, Pa.) wrestling in the freestyle tournament. LaShomb was fifth in 2003, but didn't come out of the loaded A Pool at 119 pounds in freestyle in Fargo. Lashomb went 4-2, as did Becker at 145 pounds.
