VERLANDER PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN DOUBLE-A BALL
Justin Verlander, a graduate of Old Dominion University and a right-handed pitcher for the Detroit Tigers Double-A affiliate Erie SeaWolves, is the Eastern League's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending June 26.
The 6-5, 200-pound hurler had a record of 1-0 with 18 strikeouts and a 0.00 ERA in a pair of starts last week. In his first start of the week, his Double-A debut, the 22-year old allowed just one hit and one walk in seven innings of work while striking out 11 batters to earn a win against New Hampshire at Fisher Cats Ballpark.
Verlander was equally impressive in his second appearance of the week, striking out seven batters and giving up just four hits and two walks in seven shutout innings in a no-decision against Binghamton at NYSEG Stadium. Verlander was selected by the Detroit Tigers with the second overall pick of the June 2004 draft out of ODU.
