Ricardo U. Mendoza Sr., 69, of Norfolk, a grounds maintenance worker at Old Dominion University, died Thursday at Norfolk General Hospital.

Viewing Tuesday will be from 7-9 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel.

A native of San Pablo City, Philippines, Mendoza was a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He had a passion for bicycles and billiards, both of which he mastered, and repairing bicycles of the neighborhood kids was one of his joys. After retiring from the Navy, he went to work for ODU, where his work ethic and generosity earned him ODU's Office of Administration and Finance's Gazelle Award in 2001.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Paula Manalo; sons, Dr. Ricardo Jr., an Eastern Virginia Medical School graduate and surgical resident in North Carolina and Reiner, an electronics technician in Wisconsin; a daughter, Mary Francis Nicole; brother, Lorenzo Dayo; and a niece, Ofelia Belda in the Philippines.

The funeral will be held at Major Dante Abril Funeral Home in San Pablo City, Philippines, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 8464 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23503.
