Old Dominion University President James V. Koch and President-elect Roseann Runte recently announced the appointment of David R. Hager as acting provost and vice president for academic affairs, effective Aug. 1.

Hager, an associate vice president for academic affairs at the university since 1981, will assume the duties of Jo Ann M. Gora, who is stepping down to become chancellor of the University of Massachusetts at Boston.

Koch and Runte said Hager's appointment is contingent upon Board of Visitors approval and that he would serve until a permanent appointee is named. A committee will be empaneled in July to conduct a national search for the position.

"I am delighted that Dr. Hager has accepted the position of acting provost," said Runte, who assumes the presidency July 1. "He has already served as acting provost at Old Dominion and his experience in this position will prove invaluable. I greatly appreciate his loyalty and commitment to the university. We are truly fortunate to have strong people of his caliber prepared to share their institutional knowledge, their time and energy, and their ideas for the benefit of the university."

Hager, who joined Old Dominion in 1969 as an instructor of political science, has served in an acting capacity as the university's chief academic officer on four other occasions. He has also twice led Old Dominion's self study in preparation for the review of reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, including the current three-year self-study process that began in 1999.

With Hager's appointment as acting provost, Koch and Runte have selected John P. Broderick, University Professor of English, to assume Hager's duties for the SACS reaccreditation process. Broderick, who has taught at Old Dominion since 1975, has been serving as chair of the university's steering committee for the current self study.
