Les Cappetta, executive vice president for North American business development for HMSHost, the former Host Marriott, will address students and faculty at the next Landmark Executive-in-Residence program at Old Dominion University.

Cappetta will speak at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 7, in Constant Hall Room 1005 on the Norfolk campus. The talk is free and open to the public.

HMSHost operates food, beverage and retail concessions for the travel industry. The company currently has operations worth more than $1 billion based in 70 airports in six countries. The company is headquartered in Bethesda, Md.

Cappetta cites the impact of Sept. 11, 2001, as the biggest challenge to the travel industry during his career: "The entire world seemingly changed overnight, and airports had to adapt almost immediately," he said. Airline passenger volumes hit rock bottom and increased security issues and screening procedures changed travelers' approach to the airport experience. Now, three-plus years after 9-11, airport concessionaires are reaping the results of their perseverance as revenues and passenger numbers are on the rise.
