Old Dominion University alumna Nikki O'Dell, formerly known as Schawnita, will appear in a four-part series "Slavery and the Making of America" at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, on the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS).

O'Dell will appear as Harriet Jacobs in parts three and four, titled Seeds of Destruction and The Challenge of Freedom, respectively. The series, narrated by Morgan Freeman, focuses on slavery and its effect on the creation of our nation. Each hour focuses on a different era. Part one titled The Downward Spiral, begins in the mid-1620s and continues through 1739. Liberty in the Ai, spans from the 1740s through the 1830s, looking at the rise of slavery in the colonies. The last two hours begin in the first half of the 19th century ending with the Civil War and emancipation.

O'Dell graduated with a bachelor's degree in foreign languages and a minor in women's studies.
