Old Dominion University was recognized this week for being among the top National Youth Sports Programs (NYSP) nationwide.

ODU, which offers programs in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, was among a select group of institutions to comply with all 92 national program standards, it was announced at the annual NYSP awards ceremony held at Disney World in Orlando. Only 16% of the 210 NYSP programs located at colleges and universities throughout the United States were able to meet all the standards.

Bob Case, coordinator of ODU's Sport Management Program, is the project administrator for the Norfolk and Virginia Beach NYSP. He pointed out that it was truly a team effort that allowed ODU to meet all 92 standards and be recognized in this manner.

In particular, Case praised the work of the ODU Research Foundation staff for helping to complete the hundreds of pages of documentation that are needed to meet the many NYSP and federal grant filing deadlines.

The National Youth Sport Programs at ODU are offered through a federal grant in the summer months and provide sport skill instruction and educational enrichment opportunities to more than 600 economically disadvantaged youth ages 10 to 16 in South Hampton Roads.
