BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS BEGIN TODAY

The Black History Month celebration continues at Old Dominion University with the "Miss Ebony Old Dominion University Pageant," Friday, Feb. 2.

Female students will compete for the title through personal expression, talent and intellect at 6 p.m. in the Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building auditorium. Sponsored by the Black Student Alliance, the pageant is free and open to the public.

Most of the Black History Month Programs are free and open to the public ($ indicates admission fee). For more information, call 683-4406.

Feb. 3 -- "Black Student Leadership Lab": Designed to help prepare all students for the challenges of leadership in the 21st century; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Webb University Center. Registration Required. Sponsor: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Feb. 4 -- "Elemental Renaissance": An exploration of the aesthetics and the history of hip-hop; 3:15 p.m., North Cafeteria, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Men About Progress.

Feb. 5 -- "Striving for Good Holistic Health": Dr. Isheamel Anekheton, founder and director of the Zinduka Wellness Group of Cleveland, will explain how black Americans should strive for good health; 7:30 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

Feb. 6 -- "The History of Black Resistance: From Slavery to Present": A lecture by the Black Panther Collective; 7 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Black Student Alliance.

Feb. 7 -- "I Have A Dream: The Civil Rights Fight": A discussion of the affirmative and legal actions that were taken during this fight for rights; 7 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center. Sponsor: National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Feb. 9 -- "Black Inventors Exhibit": Featuring more than 100 exhibits that showcase the many achievements of black American inventors; 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., North Mall, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Fellowship of Minority Engineers and Scientists.

Feb. 9 -- "1001 Black Inventions": A play performed by Washington, D.C.=s Pin Point Theater; 8 p.m., North Cafeteria, Webb University Center. Sponsors: Hugo A. Owens African-American Cultural Center, NAACP, Men About Progress, CBFA, Black Alumni Council and Fellowship of Minority Engineers and Scientists.

Feb. 10 -- "Trial of Christopher Columbus": A historical, dramatic, musical and comical stage production; noon to 2 p.m., Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building room 102. Sponsor: Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc.

Feb. 12 -- "History of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People": Presented by the Old Dominion NAACP; 7 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center.

Feb. 13 -- "Negro Spirituals:" A performance by Old Dominion=s Ebony Impact Gospel Choir; 12:30 p.m., South Mall, Webb University Center.

Feb. 13 -- "Black Presence in the Workplace": A discussion of the challenges and opportunities of being in a career field with limited numbers of black American colleagues; 7 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Black Student Alliance/NAACP.

Feb. 14 -- "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?": A contest based on black history trivia; 7:30 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.

Feb. 15 -- "Degrees of Reality": A discussion of the importance of a college degree; 7 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.

Feb. 16 -- "Black History Month Jam": An exploration of music history from the 60's through today=s most popular music; 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., Webb University Center. $

Feb. 19 -- "The Black Lettered Organizations= History: How Are Religious Principles Applied?": 7 p.m., Hampton/Newport News Room, Webb University Center. Sponsors: Ebony Impact Gospel Choir and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.

Feb. 20 -- "Wellness Fair": Health screenings and information; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., front lobby, Webb University Center. Information: Phoebe Butler at 683-5927. Sponsor: Student Health Center.

Feb. 20 -- "The Origins of Negro Spirituals": A performance by Old Dominion=s Ebony Impact Gospel Choir; 7 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Black Student Alliance, Ebony Impact Gospel Choir.

Feb. 21 -- "Women=s Stories from Mother Africa": A reading by Ruth Suggs Varner; noon, River Rooms, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Old Dominion Women=s Center.

Feb. 22 -- "Omega Men in History": A discussion of Omega Psi Phi fraternity throughout history; 6-7:30 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center.

Feb. 22 -- "Mind, Body, and Soul: Keeping the African-American Body Spiritually Healthy": A program explaining spiritual health; 7:30 p.m., River Rooms, Webb University Center. Sponsor: Ebony Impact Gospel Choir.
