Passport Application Information

First Time Passport Applications (6 - 8 weeks)

Fill out Form DS-11 (orange application) if:

  • you've never had a passport before
  • you lost you previous passport
  • you do not meet all requirements necessary to use the purple (DS-82) application

In order to apply, you need:

  • a completed passport application
  • 2 official passport photos taken within the last 6 months (Passport photos can be taken at the University Card Center in Webb University Center)
  • proof of U.S. citizenship (original or certified copy of your birth certificate, previous U.S. passport or naturalization papers)
  • a picture ID (valid U.S. driver's license, state ID, or military ID)
  • two checks or money orders for a total cost of $135

Apply in person to:

  • U.S. Post Office, 600 Church Street, Norfolk, VA 23501 757-629-2249 (Monday - Friday, 9am-4pm)
  • U.S. Post Office, 38th & Colley Ave, Norfolk, VA 23508 (10am-2pm, by appointment. Call 757-624-9472 to schedule)
  • Check online for other processing locations in your area.

Passport Renewal Applications (6 - 8 weeks)

Form DS-82 (purple application) applies only if:

  • previous passport was issued within the last 15 years
  • previous passport is not damaged
  • still have the same name as in passport
  • you were at least 16 years old when it was issued
  • you are not applying for an Official, Diplomatic or No-fee passport

In order to apply, you need:

  • a completed passport application
  • 2 official passport photos taken within the last 6 months
  • proof of U.S. citizenship (original or certified copy of your birth certificate, previous U.S. passport or naturalization papers)
  • a picture ID (valid U.S. driver's license, state ID, etc.)
  • a check or money order made out for the $100 fee (payable to Passport Services)

Rush Passport Applications

Eligibility:

  • you are leaving the U.S. within 14 days and you do not need a visa
  • you need a visa and you are leaving the U.S. within 3-4 weeks

Expedite fee:

  • $60 + overnight fees of $22 in addition to the regular cost of the passport

Documents needed:

  • all application materials (see above)
  • proof of departure date (copy of plane ticket, letter/invoice from Travel agency, etc...)
  • payment for rush order

Bring all materials to U.S. Post Office, 600 Church Street, Norfolk, VA 23501
(office hours 9am-4pm; Phone: 757-629-2249) or other issuing post office in your area

Same Day Passport Service (Washington, DC)

Schedule appointments 24 hours a day by calling 1-877-487-2778

Department of State/ Passport Services, 1111 19th Street NW Street 1st floor (sidewalk level; Corner 19th & L), Washington, DC

Need proof of departure date and will travel within 14 days.

Service fee: $12 (payable to State Health Department); personal check or money order, no cash
