Short - Term Programs

Congratulations on your approval for study abroad and your decision to take this exciting step!  We hope that you will have a wonderful and rewarding experience abroad.  Below you will find information about short-term programs and some of the required forms that need to be turned into our office before you leave the U.S.  The information provided on this page is not meant to be exhaustive.  Always check with the program assistant to ensure that you have completed all the necessary steps/forms that are required for your study abroad experience.

Pre-departure Orientation and Classes
All short-term programs will have at least one mandatory pre-departure orientation session (and in some cases several classes).  These meetings are an essential part of the course/program and attendance is mandatory for all participants.  We will contact you (via your ODU email account) once orientation and any other meetings for the course/program have been scheduled.

Payment of Program Fee
Check with the Office of Study Abroad about how and when to pay your program fees.

Passport
It is critical that you apply for a passport (if you do not already have one that will be valid for six months beyond your return date) as soon as you sign up for the program in order to obtain it in sufficient time to participate in the program and/or obtain any necessary visas.  We need to have your name on our application form exactly as it appears in your passport (or will appear) because names on airilne tickets must match names as they appear in one's passport or you will not be allowed to travel internationally.  For information on applying for a passport stop by our office or use the link to the State Department's website.

Health Information Form (fillable)
Because a study abroad experience can be both physically and emotionally demanding, we ask that you provide a candid evaluation of your health.  A certain amount of stress due to culture shock or a change in living conditions is a normal part of being abroad.  In some cases, such stress may aggravate disabilities or illnesses which you manage with little difficulty at home.  As you complete this form, we hope to help you consider health issues that you should take into consideration before going abroad.  This information will be used primarily to guide us in making appropriate arrangements for you as a study abroad participant.  The information provided is confidential and will be shared only with program staff, faculty, or appropriate professionals, and only if pertinent to your well-being.  The Office of Study Abroad may not be able to accommodate all individual needs or circumstances, although we will make every effort to do so.  Under "program" list the name of the program you have signed up for (i.e. "Castles and Cathedrals, London," "Commerce and Culture, Brazil," "CEPE, Mexico," "UWE Business," etc...).  Under "term" list the term you will be abroad (i.e. "Spring Break 2007," "Summer Break 2007," "Winter Break 2007," etc...).  Remember to sign the second page of this form being turning it into our office.

International Study Participation Agreement

This document needs to be reviewed, signed and turned in to the Office of Study Abroad before you leave the U.S.  Please thoroughly review all conditions of the agreement as you will be expected to uphold all responsibilities and rules of conduct outlined in it. Please initial each page and sign and date the last page. The agreement can be found online here.

Health Insurance
Old Dominion University includes travel and health insurance for all participants on faculty-led programs.  This is included in the cost of OSA faculty-led programs.  Details about coverage and limitations can be found here.
