ODU Campus Comes Together for Haiti Relief Efforts
Photos and videos of the damage from last week's earthquake disaster in Haiti have moved us all and left us wondering how we can help. At Old Dominion University, multiple efforts are underway and I encourage the entire university community to take part.
ODU student and Haiti native Annabelle Pierre has established a Facebook page to give the university community and others a personal look at her homeland. The site provides the latest news out of Haiti, as well as links to a variety of organizations accepting donations.
Tonight, ODU's Global Student Friendship and African Caribbean Student Association will hold a candlelight vigil for the victims of the Haiti earthquake from 6-8 p.m. The vigil will be held on Kaufman Mall in front of Webb University Center and will include music and poetry readings. Visit the Facebook event page for the candlelight vigil for more details.
Additionally, faculty and students from ODU's College of Health Sciences will be partnering with Physicians for Peace on a collection drive for prosthetics, wheelchairs, walkers, canes and crutches for earthquake victims. The drive will be held from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Webb University Center entrance on 49th Street near Bluestone Avenue.
Old Dominion's Center for Service and Civic Engagement is accepting monetary donations in their office, located at 1063 Webb Center. Money collected will be sent to UNICEF for relief efforts.
ODU employees can utilize the Combined Virginia Campaign to make a donation to relief efforts. Funds donated to the CVC, the workplace giving program for state employees, will be forwarded to the International Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross. To give to the Earthquake fund, employees are asked to write a check or money order to "Red Cross International Response Fund" and mail it to CVC - Disaster Relief, Dept. of Human Resource Management, 101 North 14th Street - 12th Floor, Richmond, VA 23219. Employees can also make a donation by credit card by using a standard CVC pledge card, entering charity code "9999" and mailing it to the address above. An electronic version of the pledge card is being sent via e-mail to all faculty and staff today or you can e-mail jjones@odu.edu for a copy.
The Alpha Kappa Psi Coed Professional Business Fraternity will hold a fundraising event, "Heal Haiti: A penny for your thoughts A dollar for your prayers," on Tuesday, Jan. 26 in Webb Center. Visit their Facebook event page for more details.
Again, I urge the entire Old Dominion University community to help, however small and in whatever way possible.
I firmly believe the words of Henry Drummond: "You will find, as you look back on your life, that the moments that stand out are the moments when you have done things for others."
This is one of those moments.
